Why there's no built-in option
Apple's Universal Clipboard only covers Apple devices. Google's clipboard sharing (via Gboard and some Samsung/Chromebook features) only covers Android and ChromeOS. If you carry an Android phone and work on a Mac, you're in the gap between two ecosystems, and neither side is going to close it for you.
Two honest caveats before the fix. First, mobile platforms don't allow true background clipboard sync — Android restricts background clipboard access in modern versions, so any tool needs you to open it. Second, our own desktop app is Windows-only today, so on the Mac you'll use the web app too. What follows still solves the real problem: getting text, links and files between the two devices, with a history you can search later.
The setup
1. Sign up once
Create a free account — no card needed. The free tier gives you 3 GB of storage and files up to 250 MB each.
2. Open the web app on both devices
On the Mac, keep movemywork.com open in a browser tab — Safari, Chrome, whatever you use. On the Android phone, open the same site in Chrome and sign in. You can add it to your home screen from Chrome's menu ("Add to Home screen") so it launches like an app.
3. Move things in either direction
Phone → Mac: copy something on the phone, open MoveMyWork, paste it into the new-clip box. It appears in the tab on your Mac within a couple of seconds; click it and it's on your Mac's clipboard, ready for ⌘V.
Mac → phone: paste or type into the web app on the Mac (or drag a file in). Open the site on your phone and tap the clip to copy it — or download the file straight to the phone.
What this gets you over the alternatives
- A history, not a hand-off. Everything you've moved sits in one searchable list. The link you sent yourself last Tuesday is still findable.
- Files as well as text. Photos off the phone, PDFs off the Mac — same flow, and covered in more detail in transferring files from phone to laptop.
- No same-Wi-Fi requirement. Tools like KDE Connect do clipboard sharing peer-to-peer, but both devices must be on the same local network, and its macOS port lags behind. We've compared the two properly in MoveMyWork vs KDE Connect — it's genuinely good if you're Linux + Android on home Wi-Fi.
- Share links too. Any clip can become a link with optional passphrase and expiry, so "get this to my phone" and "get this to a colleague" are the same two clicks.
The honest trade-off
Because neither Android nor macOS gets our automatic tray app today, both sides involve opening a tab. That's one step more than magic, and one step fewer than emailing yourself, finding the email on the other device, and scrolling for the attachment. If most of your work happens on a Windows PC as well, that machine does get the automatic tray app — anything you copy there just appears on the phone and the Mac.
